Partnering opportunities with the public sector

RSS Feed

There used to be a car bumper sticker popular in America back in the late 1960s which c learly let the politicians know what the American public thought about them– ‘don’t vote - it only encourages them.’

Things may be similar in Britain in 2010. With the recent recession and the fact that we’re in General Election year, levels of disillusionment and cynicism among the public and the media about government may never have been higher.

But I don’t see it that way. In the real world, business has to work with central government of whatever political colour and the public sector in general and the challenges we all face for 2010 and beyond to recover from the consequences of the recession are truly immense.

With a figure of £24 billion of central government department efficiency savings required by March 2011 being quoted in the press, organisations like TNT Business Solutions can offer true, lasting and cost-effective solutions by partnering the public sector in reaching their efficiency goals.

Our track record speaks for itself. Our records management work within the NHS at University Hospitals Coventry and Warwickshire has helped the organisation optimise its real estate and facilitated some of the cost efficiency processes at the hospital.

Thousands of patient records are now delivered each and every day to the hospital by TNT’s record management team who are dedicated to ensuring both clinicians and ultimately patients receive the very best service.

Streamlining the service and managing patient records off site has been a great success and helped the hospital towards realising its efficiency targets.

As we go through 2010 and into next year, it’s the partnering organisations like TNT Business Solutions who have quality, innovation, productivity and prevention (QIPP) at their hearts that’ll help the public sector succeed.

Our next challenge is to ensure we continue innovating alongside organisations like the NHS and evolve our service offering to complement their needs.

Clearly an evolution from physical to electronic records management for the public sector is around the corner, and the partnering organisations that will succeed will be the ones who manage to negotiate the path of embracing the digital age, while retaining support for those documents that will always remain in the physical world.

What are your thoughts on the efficiency drive in the public sector? How do you think the private sector should best support public sector organisations? Drop me a line – I’d be happy to hear from you.

If I'm honest I think there should be a streamlining of the middle managers at local government level. Redundancy is never good but the private sector is having to go through it. Local government doesn't need as many layers of managers as it currently has. If you want to save money then that would be a good place to start. And, if outsourcing means that productivity is under closer scrutiny then I am fully behind that. It's time those at local government realised that they can no longer hide behind the red tape.

I agree with Jim P, but think this should go further. It angers me that the big UK banks are owned by the public, which of course includes workers in the public sector, and yet the banks are still allowed to dish out huge bonuses to their staff, rather than being forced to invest these funds into rebuilding other areas of our society such as the public sector, where the money can be used to invest in new technologies and developments, and save jobs on the process!
